5.2 Provide feedback to students on their learning

Provide timely, effective and appropriate feedback to students about their achievement relative to their learning goals.

“A teacher has the distinct responsibility to nurture a student’s learning and to provide feedback in such a manner that the student does not leave the classroom feeling defeated.” (TeachThought, 2013)

Positive reinforcement, constructive criticism and feedback are very important learning tools but in order to be effective, they must be done in a timely manner; you can't get upset at a student for talking in class a few weeks ago and feedback on assessments is no different. In order to help students understand how they are performing and what they can improve on, we must inform them!

On my teaching rounds, I was asked to implement and mark a year 7 English class' Opinion Essays. I produced the rubric a week before the assessment was given and went through it with the class so that every student was aware of what my expectations were and also an electronic copy was made available for the students on the schools intranet.

Once the assessment was completed, I spent the weekend marking their essays with the rubric; as such the students had them returned the following week. Although those circumstances were unique, I believe getting feedback to students as soon as possible is very important. Also writing comments I feel is the best way to communicate to students in which areas they can improve. In the evidence attached, I have copies of the rubrics of two of those students to demonstrate how I feel best to give feedback.
