3.6 Evaluate and improve teaching programs

Evaluate personal teaching and learning programs using evidence, including feedback from students and student assessment data, to inform planning

The value of reflection on lesson plans and teaching practice is paramount to maintaining a high excellence in the education field. Keys ways to maintain this practice is to stay up to date with the latest pedagogies, be flexible in your practice which is made easier by over planning your course material, reflect on your own practice, observe students ongoing involvement with the course material, monitor students success and conference with your peers.

"Great teachers know when to make decisions quickly and when to step back and reflect." (Danielson, 2009)

Questioning techniques for self-evaluation are paramount in improvement on teaching practices.

Some great prompts from Danielson (2009) are:

  • What worked in this lesson? How do I know?

  • What would I do the same or differently if I could reteach this lesson? Why?

  • What root cause might be prompting or perpetuating this student behavior?

  • What do I believe about how students learn? How does this belief influence my instruction?

  • What data do I need to make an informed decision about this problem?

  • Is this the most efficient way to accomplish this task?

In my experience on teaching rounds, I found I got my greatest lessons on teaching from the feedback and constructive criticism of my associate teachers which I have attached as evidence.
